What is Hypnosis?
You might be surprised to hear that most neurotypical people naturally enter a state of light hypnosis (all on their own) many times during their day. For instance, have you ever driven home form the grocery store to find yourself at home but you can't recall the trip? Have you been so involved in reading a book that hours will pass by, seeming like minutes? Daydreaming and "spacing out" are both natural hypnotic states as well, and there are infinite opportunities for our brains to do this throughout the day. This is called "environmental hypnosis."
Hypnosis is a natural state in which the body experiences deep physical relaxation while the mind remains clear, alert and focused. In this state of awareness, the subconscious mind becomes open and operable, allowing for new information to be introduced and accepted. The conscious mind, ("What's for dinner? I need to get gas on the way home. Did I make that vet appointment?") takes a break and you get direct access to your subconscious mind, where the deep rooted thought processes are formed and rehearsed.
Does hypnosis really work? Yes. The power of hypnosis is documented by doctors, dentists and many other leading health professionals. It was approved as a legitimate medical and dental treatment method by the American Medical Association in 1958.
Is Hypnosis Safe? Yes. Many doctors and psychologists agree that hypnosis is a powerful tool and a safe form of therapy when practiced by a skilled hypnotherapist. Hypnosis uses the power of your own mind, while the hypnotherapist only acts as your guide. You are always in control and fully aware of what is going on around you. Since you are ALWAYS in control, you cannot be hypnotized against your will, nor can you be made to do things against your will. Although you are in a trance like state, with your conscious mind relaxed, it is still there acting as a filter for you to decipher right from wrong.
What does hypnosis feel like? Personally, I think it feels like story time when I was in kindergarten. You will be sitting or laying in a comfortable position and relaxing while listening to a story. If you have ever had a massage or acupuncture, enjoy ASMR or meditation, you may be familiar with the feeling of deep relaxation that is similar to that experienced during hypnosis. You will become more and more relaxed while I talk and you may even drift off for a while with your own thoughts, until you suddenly remember I’m talking. You’ll come back to my story for a while and we’ll continue on our journey until the session ends. My clients always open their eyes feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.
